Spain deliver heroics at FIBA 3x3 W Series Poitiers stop 2024

Poitiers (FRANCE) - Spain go unbeaten and come up clutch in thrilling 13-14 OT final win over Germany at the FIBA 3x3 Poitiers stop 2024 on June 25 - 26.

The winner: Spain

Though without their veteran duo of Vega Gimeno and Sandra Ygueravide, winning was no problem for the Spanish side as they found new ways to get results

They started off with a gritty 13-9 victory over China U24 side with the trio of Gala Mestres, Cecilia Muhate and Gracia Alonso bearing the offensive load. It was a challenging matchup against the Dutch next, but Spain held on for the 14-16 win. Juana Camilion and Gracia Alonso got 6 each. They closed off pool play with a dominant 21 - 7 win over Ireland thanks to a 9-point Camilion game.

Camilion continued her form heading into the Semi-Final as her 8 points led the team in scoring in the 20-13 win over Ukraine. Muhate and Alonso combined for 10 as well, booking themselves a spot in the final.

The runner-up: Germany

The Germans came out swinging in Poitiers, hoping to pick up their first stop win.

They swept past Bordeaux Ballistik 21 - 7, led by Marie Reichert and Sonja Greinacher who both put up 8. A 17 - 10 result followed against Gyor, a monster game from Greinacher leading the charge with 6 points and 13 rebounds.

They closed out pool phase with a 19 - 15 victory over Ukraine, Greinacher coming up big again with 8 points while Elisa Mevius chipped in with 7.

It was a tough challenge in the Semis, as they came away with an 11 - 10 result in OT against the Netherlands. Greinacher was immense yet again on both ends, grabbing 10 rebounds alongside 4 points, including the clutch free throw.

They had booked their ticket to the final, a titan matchup against Spain.

The final

Spain 14 - 13 Germany

A gritty battle from the start, it was Spain who started off with offensive success early. Mestres and Camilion scored the initial buckets before Mevius and Sunny G got things going for Germany.

Germany started to pull away thanks to Greinacher and Reichert, a 7 - 4 advantage halfway into the action. Though Spain fought back, the offensive duo that had been successful all the way for the Germans kept them a step ahead. However, with just over a minute to go, Spain fought back and leveled things thanks to Alonso and Camilion.

Greinacher and Alonso traded buckets in the final seconds as the game found itself heading to Overtime. Sunny G got an important bucket but a foul sending Camilion to the line would be the final blow as she would make two free throws to seal the thrilling win for the Spaniards.
